This helpful guide will take you through applying for VAT relief on our products and will help you determine if you are eligible for 0% VAT. You can apply for VAT relief when you order with us if you or a family member you are purchasing for have a long-term medical condition or are registered disabled. VAT relief also applies to charities that support the elderly and disabled.

What is VAT?

VAT relief stands for Value Added Tax and is sometimes known as a service tax. It applies to almost all goods and services sold. VAT is a general tax that is calculated as a percentage depending on the amount of the item or service you are wanting to purchase.

Who qualifies for VAT exemption?

You qualify for VAT relief if you or the person you are buying for are disabled, have a long-term chronic illness or are terminally ill. You can get more information on who is VAT exempt online.

The table below lists some of the disabilities or chronic illnesses that are included and some that are excluded from paying VAT on our products. For a person to be VAT exempt, they need to have a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial adverse effect upon their ability to carry out day to day activities. A person can also be exempt from paying VAT if they have a condition that the medical profession treats as chronic. Once you have found out if you are eligible for VAT relief, you can take a look at products and services that will help support you in your everyday life. VAT relief usually applies to products or services that are designed or adapted for a disability. Opera predominately provide adjustable beds, profiling beds and mattresses, which you can get with 0% VAT if you qualify. However, accessories and maintenance checks can also be purchased VAT free. How do I apply for VAT relief?

Applying for 0% VAT on our relevant products is easy. All you need to do is tell us in writing who you are and why you are eligible for VAT relief. You can do this in two ways:

Ordering online

When you add items to your basket from our website and then click 'Complete your order' or you click on the Cart icon at the top right of the website, you will see a box that says 'Entitled to VAT Relief?'. Here you can enter your details and the VAT will be taken off your total.

Order over the phone

If you are unsure if you are eligible for VAT relief or prefer to order over the phone, one of our dedicated advisors will be happy to help you with your order and will be able to advise you on any questions you may have. To order with VAT relief on the phone, one of our advisers will ask you for an email address to send you a declaration form to fill in and send back to us. This form is for you to declare that you fit the criteria for VAT relief and to give a brief description of your medical condition. You can pay over the phone without the VAT and then delivery/installation will take place once the form is returned to us.

If you have already purchased including VAT before completing the form, please contact us and the VAT amount will be refunded back to you.

Charities

If you are a registered charity who provide funding or support to the elderly or disabled, you can also purchase our products without VAT.
