How to Improve Neck Pain from Sleeping

Back

Suffering from neck pain is, well, a pain in the neck! Especially if it’s causing you issues throughout the day and stopping you from sleeping at night. You may have tried everything to ease it, but have you ever considered how your sleep position could be affecting it or even causing it?

Here are some changes you could be making to your sleep that could help ease neck pain.

There are many options out there to help you with neck pain. If you are suffering, it might be a good idea to invest in some items for your bed to help relieve long term pain.

Pillows for neck pain

A good quality pillow is essential when you’re sleeping.

Cervical pillows are specifically designed to support your neck and help to ease any neck ache or pain. They are different to standard pillows because the dip in the middle offers an extra layer of support for your neck.

Feather pillows are also good as they are much softer and offer more support to your neck than standard pillows.

It’s also important to avoid piling your pillows too high, as this can cause even more strain on your neck.

Mattresses for neck pain

A good quality mattress is crucial if you struggle with neck pain. Memory foam mattress “remember” the shape of your body and offer you instant support when you get into bed. Supporting your spine is equally as important and can also help to ease neck pain.

Adjustable beds for neck pain

Adjustable beds can help with neck pain as you can tailor your posture to your specific needs. You can use your adjustable bed to keep your neck in a neutral position, which is known to be one of the more effective ways to sleep when you’re suffering from neck pain.

Sleep positions to relieve neck pain

Your sleep position impacts your sleep quality, and sleeping a certain way could help ease or make your neck pain worse. Changing your sleep position can be difficult as most people have had their preferred sleeping positions since childhood. However, changing it could not only help reduce neck pain but also prevent aches and pains in other parts of your body too.

Sleeping on your back to help with neck pain

This position provides the best support for the whole of your body. Use a thin pillow to support your neck. Using an adjustable bed is even more effective as you can adjust the bed into your perfect position to ensure you are supported throughout the whole night.

Sleeping on your side to help with neck pain

Sleeping on your side is another way to help ease neck pain. This position is also known to have more health benefits, including improving your digestions and circulation.

However, avoid tucking your chin in as this could cause further pain in your neck.

Be sure to switch sides while you’re sleeping otherwise you may end up waking up feeling stiff on one side of your body, although this is usually something people naturally do while they are sleeping. You could also place a pillow between your legs which can help to keep your lower spine aligned.

Sleeping on your front to help with neck pain

Sleeping on your front is a popular sleep position; however, it’s not great for those with neck pain as it provides you with little support to your head and neck. Consider swapping to another sleep position - such as your side or back - if you struggle with neck pain.

If you must sleep on your front, a feather pillow can be effective as it provides some soft support for your head and lowers the pressure on your neck.
