Bariatric care beds are designed for larger, heavier users, so are generally bigger than a typical bed. A typical single bed is usually 3ft/90cm wide whereas a bariatric bed is usually 4ft/120cm wide, giving more space for the larger individual.
As well as being larger than a standard bed, the frame of a bariatric bed is designed to take more weight. For example, the Opera Signature Bariatric Bed has a safe working load of up to 300kg/47 stone. Click to find out more about the weight capacity of a bariatric bed.
How heavy is a bariatric patient?
To be classified as bariatric, the WHO defines eligibility as having a BMI of 40 or weighing at least 100 lbs over your ideal body weight.
What is the medical term for being overweight?
Beginning with "Normal", there are five categories of weight classification which are defined by BMI.
These are:
- Normal – BMI 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight – BMI 25 – 29.9
- Obese – BMI 30 – 34.9
- Severely Obese – BMI 35 – 39.9
- Morbidly Obese – BMI 40+
What makes someone bariatric?
Patients who have a BMI of 30 or greater may be classified as bariatric and therefore may be more suited to a bariatric bed.
Which users need a bariatric bed?
If a patient weighs greater than 32 stone they will require a bariatric bed. The Opera Classic Hospital Bed has a safe working load of 32 stone and therefore wouldn’t be suitable for a user of this weight.
Which mattress can be used on a bariatric bed?
Due to the 4ft/120cm width of a bariatric bed, a standard 3ft/120cm hospital mattress will not be suitable. Depending on the user’s pressure risk category we typically recommend the Ultimate Profiling Mattress or the Impulse Hybrid Mattress.
How much do bariatric beds cost?
