How to Care for Your New Mattress in 2024

Caring for an adjustable mattress will be similar to that of a regular mattress, but with some extra considerations. Your routine will also depend on whether you have a comfort mattress or a pressure care mattress. Cleaning and maintaining your new mattress is simple with this helpful guide.

Adjustable comfort mattresses

Rotate your mattress

It is common to rotate or flip a standard mattress to avoid sagging and maintain its condition. A mattress is usually made up of layers of materials, springs or foams in a particular comfort order, which can often mean most mattress designs don’t recommend you flip them. However, regular rotating is a must to maintain the condition of your mattress, especially if you are using it for an adjustable bed. Adjustable mattresses need to be rotated on a regular basis, 180-degrees so that the head end is replaced by the foot end. Regular rotation is a must for maximum comfort and prolonging the lifespan of your adjustable mattress. When weight is concentrated in one area, for example using the sitting position often, this can cause slight depressions in the mattress so regular turning of once a month ensures your mattress has time to recover and stays in top condition.

Air out your mattress

Every day you should take all bed sheets off for a while to air out your mattress. It is a good idea to take off all sheets and mattress protectors off often too, we recommend doing this as often as possible or at least every three months. This is to allow moisture from water vapor and sweat to evaporate, keeping your mattress cleaner and reducing dust mites that thrive in a damp environment. Waterproof mattress protectors are an excellent way to protect your mattress from spillages, however regular airing out of the mattress by taking it off is recommended as they can be prone to condensation.

How to clean your mattress

Caring for an adjustable mattress should consist of brushing off any dust, airing out your mattress and ensuring any spills are dealt with as soon as possible by blotting with a clean cloth. Vacuuming around the side of your bed in the surround and under it if possible, will reduce the amount of dust accumulating, however vacuuming your mattress isn’t always recommended as it can move the materials within your mattress, depending on which one you have. Therefore, gently brushing off any dust, hair or dirt is recommended as part of your mattress cleaning routine to reduce bacteria. If you think a spillage has gone deeper into the mattress, you can use a mild soap and water to clean the area. We do not recommend any harsh cleaning solutions or letting liquids soak into the mattress. Blot the area with a clean cloth, spray mild soapy water onto the area, then blot dry with another clean cloth.

Deeper spillages or stronger odours such as urine will need more attention. According to Good Housekeeping, the key is to not over wet the mattress more any more than necessary for cleaning. Use a sponge and cold solution of washing up liquid or a mild upholstery shampoo and a few drops of disinfectant. Do not scrub but blot the solution on and blot dry with a clean cloth. Allow the mattress to fully air dry before putting on the sheets. If the mattress is still damp when it comes to the night time, put a towel over the area and the bed sheets, then remove all in the morning and allow the mattress to continue to air dry.

Washing the sheets

When cleaning your mattress, you also need to consider regular washing of your bed sheets and mattress protector. This will keep your mattress in great condition because this minimises the risk of dirt or stains from transferring onto the mattress itself. We recommend sheets to be washed every 1-2 weeks or sooner if needed.

Mattress protectors

Using a mattress protector does what it says, protects your brand new, clean mattress. You can purchase a range of different mattress protectors with different levels of comfort and protection. We recommend the Opera® Quilted Mattress Protector Sheet, which is a premium soft mattress protector which is also waterproof. This mattress protector encompasses both comfort and protection and is designed to work with our adjustable beds and mattresses.

How to clean your mattress

Looking after your adjustable pressure care mattress is easy due to the wipe clean covers the mattress is surrounded by. The anti-microbial cover reduces the amount of bacteria within the mattress and instantly protects against liquid damage. Regular wiping down of the whole mattress is recommended with a soft clean cloth and a disinfectant to kill surface bacteria. The cleaning routine will depend on the users needs but it is recommended to clean the mattress as often as possible and that spillages are dealt with right away.

Rotating the mattress

Pressure care mattresses are often made of layered foams and are a no-flip mattress. The rotating routine will be different depending on which mattress you have, but generally pressure care mattresses are designed with a specific head/foot end. For example, we do not recommend rotating the Opera® Impulse Hybrid Mattress due to the gel-infused heel zone at the foot of the mattress.
