So, you've bought or are thinking of buying an adjustable bed. Considering all of the associated benefits to your health and well-being, you'll want to make sure you can maximise the bed's features.
To do this, you'll need a mattress that can contort and adjust with the adjustable bed base; otherwise, you'll restrict the bed's movement and compromise on comfort. But which mattress should you choose? And how do you know which will be most suitable for your needs?
We created this guide to answer these questions and help you find the right adjustable mattresses for your bed.
Here, we explore how to check if your adjustable mattress is suitable and how you can decide on the right firmness. But first, let's look at the different types of mattresses you can get from Opera Beds.
What are the different types of adjustable bed mattresses?
Each of our mattresses is carefully designed to work with our adjustable electric beds, moving together in sync to offer maximum flexibility and support while you rest.
Our adjustable mattresses also have an anti-slip base cover, which prevents the mattress from slipping out of place when your bed adjusts.
To promote a restful night's sleep and help you effectively manage any conditions or ailments, we offer mattresses in various fillings, including supportive orthopaedic foam and cooling infused gels. Our range includes:
Pressure care and air mattresses
Our pressure care mattresses are made up of air cells that inflate and deflate to redistribute pressure points across the body. This helps to prevent and treat pressure sores, so if you or a loved one has to spend long periods in bed because of a condition, an air mattress could be a worthwhile investment.
Our range of air mattresses includes:
-
Relieve Overlay – This is designed to be placed on top of an existing static mattress, but it can adjust and contort if used on an adjustable bed base, if required.
-
Flo – Features 16 air cells that alternate to redistribute pressure. It is made with a water-resistant, vapour-permeable PU cover to reduce moisture and heat build-up to help uphold the skin's integrity.
-
Flo Auto – Made with an antimicrobial cover that's machine washable and resistant to bacterial and fungal growth.
-
Eclipse – Automatically weighs the user and responds to their body weight, effectively applying the optimal level of airflow.
All of our air mattresses come with a quiet air pump, which ensures users can remain comfortable throughout the night and enjoy undisturbed sleep.
Memory foam mattresses
If you prefer a more supportive and firmer mattress, you may wish to choose a foam mattress. Foam mattresses are a great option that offer excellent spinal support, while the foam layer offers quality shape retention and proven longevity.
-
Memory – Constructed from a visco and memory foam topper, this mattress adjusts to the contours of your body, distributing pressure to provide relief and enhance your sleep.

Hybrid mattresses: A combination of foam and gel
If you want the combination of gel's cooling properties and foam's utmost comfort, a hybrid mattress may be for you.
Each layer serves a particular purpose to support you while you sleep - advanced orthopaedic foams, pocket springs, and cooling gel layers work together to provide maximum comfort, spinal support, and temperature regulation.
Explore Opera's hybrid mattresses:
-
Gel 1000 – A soft-to-medium mattress with 1000 pocket springs encapsulated in high-density foam to provide a combination of support and responsiveness.
-
Gel 4000 – 4000 pocket springs and multiple layers of foam create a firm and supportive mattress that conforms to our range of adjustable bed bases.

Traditional Pocket Sprung
A pocket-sprung mattress is excellent for regulating body temperature as you sleep. However, not all standard pocket-sprung mattresses are suitable for electric beds, so you must check with your provider.
Our luxury pocket sprung mattresses with natural fillings include:
-
Mallow – Made with over 1,000 pocket springs and layers of wool and cotton for enhanced comfort.
-
Emporia – Consists of several layers of luxurious natural fillings, including sheep's wool and cashmere.
-
Vicuna – Handmade to order with individually nested and sleeved pocket springs for the ultimate comfort and support.

How much do adjustable bed mattresses cost?
A new mattress from Opera Beds can cost between £295 for our Divan High Risk Mattress up to £3,795 for the Vicuna Luxury Adjustable Mattress.
Costs vary based on the size, type, and makeup of the mattress, with our most premium prices reflecting the technology and materials used to craft the product.
The Vicuna mattress, for example, is crafted with natural fillings, such as Dartmoor sheep wool, hand-teased horse tail, and rare alpaca wool. It also comes with a 15-year warranty for complete peace of mind.
Elsewhere in our range, our hybrid adjustable bed mattresses start from £725, while our memory foam mattresses are available from £495 with VAT relief.
Every rotating bed purchased from Opera Beds comes with a mattress included. However, if you require a replacement mattress, prices start from £1,000 and are specially designed to work seamlessly with our chair beds. They adjust in perfect harmony with the frame as you move from sitting to standing, ensuring total comfort and support at every stage.

Can I use any mattress on an adjustable bed?
In short, no. Using a traditional mattress on an adjustable bed would be like trying to get a square peg in a round hole.
Standard mattresses are rigid structures that do not follow the movement of the base. This leads to uncomfortable pressure points and lumps that negatively affect sleep quality, not to mention damaging the mattress.
If you use a traditional mattress on an adjustable bed, you could be putting yourself at risk of injury. Without the right grip and flexibility, the mattress could slide around or shift out of position, making the bed unsafe.
If you have specific health concerns that can be alleviated by an adjustable bed, e.g. acid reflux, sleep apnoea or chronic muscle or joint pain that is reduced by proper spinal alignment, an adjustable mattress will help you make the most of the features that reduce the symptoms of these ailments.
How to check if your adjustable mattress is suitable
Even if you have an adjustable mattress already, it’s key that you check whether it’s suitable for your adjustable bed. Measure the size and depth of your current mattress to check that it will fit within the bed base.
Our adjustable mattresses are available in the following sizes:
-
Single adjustable mattresses – 3ft (90cm) wide
-
Wide single mattresses – 3ft 6in (105cm) wide
-
Small double mattresses – 4ft (120cm) wide
-
Double adjustable mattresses – 4ft 6in (135cm) wide
-
King size adjustable mattresses – 5ft (150cm)
-
King dual mattresses – 5ft (150cm) wide
-
Super king mattresses – 6ft (180cm) wide
-
Super king dual mattresses – 6ft (180cm) wide
The full dimensions and specifications of our adjustable beds are at the bottom of the specific bed page. Look for the mattress platform length and width.
Our dual adjustable beds have separate mattress platforms, which require two individual mattresses. So, if you have a complete king or super king adjustable mattress, it won't suit our dual beds.
If you’re using your own adjustable mattress, ensure it is the same width to avoid having one side of the bed higher than the other.

FAQs about adjustable bed mattresses
What is the impact of mattress thickness on compatibility with adjustable beds?
In theory, mattress thickness can significantly impact compatibility with an adjustable bed. If it’s too thick, the mattress may resist bending as the bed is repositioned.
However, if you buy a mattress specially designed for adjustable beds, it will be made to ensure you’re adequately supported as the bed contours.
Take our luxury Vicuna mattress, for example. It’s 11.8 inches (300mm) thick yet specifically designed to work seamlessly with the full range of adjustable bed settings, so you can enjoy a truly restful night’s sleep.
Can adjustable bed mattresses be used on regular beds?
They certainly can. Although our adjustable bed mattresses are made to move and contour with adjustable hospital beds, they still provide a brilliant level of support and comfort on regular beds.
As well as high-quality electric adjustable beds, we offer everything you need for a restful night's sleep and to make the most of your electric bed with our adjustable bed accessories, including electric blankets, bedding, hospital bed mattresses, profiling bed mattresses, and more.
