Are you or a loved one due to come out of hospital soon? You’ve probably been given a list of assistive equipment by your care team, including a hospital bed or electric bed, which needs to be installed in your home before they’re able to discharge you.
Below is a quick guide on how to get a hospital for the home and some things you need to consider.
There are two ways to get a medical bed for home
1. Apply for a bed from the hospital or local council
The NHS, your hospital or local council may be able to provide you with a hospital-style bed or funding for a medical bed.
Speak with your occupational therapist, district nurse or GP to find out if you are eligible. If you’re eligible, a request is sent to the hospital or council to arrange for either funding or for a hospital bed to be delivered to your home.
The only issue with this route is that it could involve a lengthy process to secure your bed, and therefore you may have to wait longer to be discharged. If you’re looking for a quick discharge, this option may not be viable.
Additionally, the bed provided may be only temporary until you can purchase your own assistive equipment.
2. Purchase a hospital bed
Investing in your own medical bed is also a feasible option for some, and it gives you more control over delivery times and design.
Purchasing a hospital bed means that you can choose something that fits both your medical needs and home surroundings. It’s also an excellent option for those who want a quick discharge from the hospital as, typically, suppliers can achieve faster delivery and installation.
Key considerations when getting a hospital bed at home
Is the bed suitable for your care needs?
Hospital and electric bed companies are usually fairly knowledgeable about their customers’ care needs, but the ultimate decision lies with you. You need to be able to trust your provider.
At Opera, we’re happy to assist you in choosing the most suitable care bed for your healthcare needs at home. We have years of experience working with care providers, family members and the users of our beds to ensure they have outstanding care in a homely, pleasant environment.
Every one of our hospital beds is NHS approved. For example, our electrically-adjusted beds are height adjustable to help you and your carer with easy access and mobility.
Meanwhile, our adjustable mattress platforms are designed with adjustable backrests and legrest sections to help the user to reposition themselves and maintain independence.
How fast can you get your bed?
Because you are dealing directly with a supplier, instead of applying through your NHS trust or a local authority, the process of getting your bed delivered is usually a lot faster.
Each company has its own delivery times and shipping policies, so be sure to check them out before you decide to buy.
At Opera, we have Next Day Delivery available for all stocked goods placed by 3pm on Monday to Friday.
Who is assembling your bed?
If you have no way to install your care bed into your home, some companies offer an installation service.
We have a two-person installation crew who can arrive at your home within 2-3 working days of purchasing. They will deliver and set up your new bed.
Additionally, if you need someone to remove your old bed and mattress, we can take these away for you, where they can be sustainably disposed of or donated to charity, depending on their condition.
Has it got an appealing design?
When you arrive home from the hospital, you want to be surrounded by home comforts and things that feel familiar to you.
Unfortunately, many traditional medical beds for the home look exactly like the bed you’ve been using while in hospital.
If home style is important for you, choosing a hospital bed with an attractive design will be on your priority list.
At Opera, our British designers and creatives make sure every one of our products balances advanced medical functionality with elegant, contemporary design.
