Frequently Asked Questions About Adjustable Beds
What is the zero-gravity position?
NASA initially developed the zero-gravity position to ease the stress on astronauts' bodies as they launch into space. The position replicates weightlessness and is the body's natural position when there is no gravity. The position has many benefits for us here on earth, including improved breathing, reduced pain and swelling, better heart health, and even acid reflux prevention.
In basic terms, you achieve the position by laying flat on your back and raising both your head and feet slightly above your heart and stomach. Luckily, with an Opera® bed, achieving zero-gravity is effortless with a pre-programmed zero-gravity position on every remote.
Can I use any mattress on an adjustable bed?
Standard mattresses are not designed for use on an electric bed base. If you want to use your existing mattress then it all depends on the type of mattress you own. Standard sprung mattresses are not compatible but some foam models are, it's best to check with your mattress supplier.
All Opera mattresses are designed for use on adjustable and moving bed bases with specially designed hinge points and filling materials for maximum flexibility and support.
Can I buy a split adjustable bed for two people?
Of course! If you're sharing with a partner, you can buy a dual/split/twin bed that provides the ultimate comfort for both of you.
Opera beds in a king and super king size have a dual adjustable base. Each person has their own handheld control and mattress adjustment options - no need to fight over the remote!
Are adjustable beds difficult to setup?
If you've put together furniture before, you should be able to set up your adjustable bed with ease. In fact, all of our beds are designed for straightforward self-assembly so you experience comfort as soon as possible.
Don't fancy assembling the bed, or need some assistance? We offer a professional installation service to give you peace of mind.
Are electric beds noisy?
A quality adjustable electric bed should never be noisy. Your bed shouldn't disturb your rest and relaxation, and that's why the motors in Opera adjustable beds are super quiet.
Can I get VAT relief on my bed?
If you are buying an electric bed for personal use or a family member/loved one, VAT relief can be applied if you/they are registered disabled or have a recognised long-term medical condition. VAT relief also applies to related products and services such as mattresses, bedding, and your delivery.
For more information on VAT relief, view the gov.uk website.
What is an electric adjustable bed?
An electric adjustable bed is a bed that has an adjustable back and leg rest. Through the use of a remote handset, these features can be altered to give you maximum comfort.
As well as optimum comfort, an electric adjustable bed will give you improved postural support and lifestyle benefits. Your overall quality of sleep will improve..
Our spines make up a natural 'S' shape, which conventional beds don't conform to, and this sometimes leads to back pain. Using the adjustable bed’s controls, you can make your bed align perfectly with the curve of your spine.
Opera® adjustable beds are different to most other electric beds on the market as they host an array of advanced smart technology, including:
- Zero gravity & anti-snore features
- Smartphone app control
- Massage therapy
- An under-bed lighting feature
- A wall-hugging structure
How do adjustable beds work?
Each bed comes with a straightforward electric handset that allows you to change the position of each section of the bed to find a comfortable position to sleep in. You can change this yourself, or use a selection of pre-programmed positions that have been specially created for ease of use.
If you share your bed with a partner or spouse, you can even buy a split double/twin bed. This allows both of you to choose your own sleeping positions, with each side of the bed being independent of the other.
A favourite: Our Opera® Flyte Dual Adjustable Bed. This bed can be purchased in two sizes: a king dual bed (150cm/5ft) or a super king dual bed (180cm/6ft).
The process of using our electric adjustable beds is effortless, as the handsets are designed for ease of use. Our handsets have a light feature and all the buttons are backlit, enabling use in the dark.
Why should you choose an Opera® adjustable bed?
Opera® adjustable beds are a step up from regular slatted adjustable divan beds, as they offer better quality, more features, and enhanced comfort.

What other benefits can an Opera® adjustable bed give you?
Electric adjustable beds have an array of benefits that can make you sleep better and enhance comfort.
An electric adjustable bed is now a necessity for many people - particularly if you’re struggling to sleep and get comfortable. Some of our beds also come in double sizes, meaning you don't have to have a separate bed from your spouse or partner, giving you an extra bit of comfort when sleeping. All our dual adjustable beds come with two hand controls, allowing each side of the bed to be adjusted individually.
A full range of health benefits
One of the main reasons that people buy adjustable beds is due to their positive health effects. An adjustable bed can have a positive impact on your health and wellbeing, making them particularly useful items to own.
Our electric beds include the Zero Gravity feature.
This zero gravity position was actually first invented by the American space organisation NASA. It was designed to ease stress on the bodies of astronauts in space, replicating weightlessness.
Zero gravity is a safe sleeping position and is associated with improving comfort and sleep quality by:
- Reduced pain and swelling
- Increased heart health and improved breathing
- Acid reflux prevention
Available as a pre-programmed position on your handset remote, the option of zero gravity is made easy with our adjustable beds.
Some of the other medical benefits that our electric beds can add to your life include:
- A decrease in musculoskeletal pain
- Increased blood flow to the heart and overall body
- Diminished sleep apnea and snoring
- Improved breathing and oxygen circulation, as well as an alleviation of asthma symptoms
- Reduced insomnia
- Decreased leg swelling and varicose veins
- Less pressure on the back, reducing the risk of pressure sores
- Decreased back and neck pain
- Improved digestion
- Relief from arthritis (in some cases, an adjustable bed can actually prevent you from getting this disease)
- Reduced heartburn and acid reflux issues
So as you can see, using one of our electric adjustable beds can have a great effect on your health - particularly as you get older.
At Opera Beds, we also have a massive range of mattresses and other accessories that can help you with your health.
If you're worried about pressure sores or pressure on your back causing pain, our collection of pressure care mattresses could be perfect when combined with one of our beds!
Added comfort and support
Our electric adjustable beds are perfectly designed to help you with your everyday aches and pains, with our exclusive sleep technology ensuring you get a decent sleep quality - which can be difficult when you have a disability or an illness that causes pain when sleeping.
If you suffer from insomnia or find it hard to drift off at night, using an adjustable bed will allow you to change your sleeping arrangements to suit your needs.
By raising the back rest, there is no need to rearrange your pillows or get someone else to help you get comfortable in bed. These beds also give added support over a conventional bed/mattress, making sleeping easier in general.
Improved quality of sleep
One of the major advantages of using an adjustable bed is that it will improve your overall quality of sleep, making you feel a lot more rested than sleeping on a standard bed. If you're uncomfortable in bed, you're likely to change positions a lot, which may lead to you waking up more and more.
With our electric adjustable beds, you're sure to have a better night's sleep, as you can use the electric handset to create a comfortable position on your bed that suits your needs. Studies have shown that getting a new bed and mattress can improve your quality of sleep in general.
Sleeping with your legs elevated has many health benefits, such as improving circulation and relieving back pain. You're sure to wake up feeling refreshed every time you go to sleep, ready for the next day ahead!

More Common Questions
Are adjustable beds too big for a small bedroom?
Opera’s adjustable beds, in the single 3ft size, are made the same width as a standard single bed but are a little longer. So, if you are thinking of purchasing for a smaller room, the only size consideration you really need to think about is allowing for a little extra length of around 10-12cm. Although furniture and walk-around room should be taken into consideration for your comfort.
Why don't you sell a standard double size bed?
We provide single and small double sizes for adjustable beds, which have one platform and are designed to accommodate one user comfortably. The next size options then become dual platform, which means each user can control their side of the bed independently. If a dual platform was made in the standard double (4ft 6in) size, each platform would be much too narrow for comfortable use. Therefore, our next size up is a 5ft King Dual, allowing more room for each platform.
Do I need to buy special sheets for an adjustable bed?
Most standard flat or fitted sheets work acceptably with electric and orthopaedic beds. For a perfect fit, we recommend Opera® Jersey Stretch Sheets which are made specifcally for our beds and stretch/conform to the profiling mattress.
Most adjustable beds are 200cm/6ft6 long, so you will need long single sheets compared to a standard UK single, which is 190cm/6ft3.
