Types of Headboards for an Adjustable Bed

Depending on your budget, style and colour scheme, there are several headboard options for an adjustable bed.

The most common types of headboards are;

  • Attachable – also known as frame-mounted
  • Wall-mounted – also known as floating
  • Free-standing – also known as stand-alone
  • Panel

Attachable headboards

An attachable headboard is a type of headboard that can be attached to the frame of an adjustable bed. This type of headboard is also known as a frame-mounted headboard. It is designed to fit onto the brackets of the adjustable bed frame and can be secured using screws or bolts.

Our Motion Adjustable Bed and Motion Divan Adjustable Bed are both attachable headboard options, available in a variety of sizes and two fabrics.

Wall-mounted headboards

These types of headboards are attached directly to the wall. Also referred to as floating headboards, installation can be trickier as the headboard requires fastening it to wall studs. One factor to consider for this option is decorating in the future, as the headboard is mounted to the wall it limits the ability to rearrange furniture.

Installation of a wall-mounted headboard

If you are considering installing a wall-mounted headboard for an adjustable bed, it’s essential that you take precise measurements and accuracy.

Installing a wall-mounted headboard for an adjustable bed requires some planning and precise measurements. The headboard mounts work like picture-hanger mounts with a hook or clasp that slides into a slotted receptacle to hold the product in place.

To install a wall-mounted headboard, you need to take the following steps:

  1. Measure the height from the floor to the top of the mattress, and subtract a few inches from that measurement to determine the desired height of the headboard.
  2. Locate the wall studs using a stud finder and mark them with a pencil.
  3. Attach the headboard mounts to the wall studs, using screws and a drill. Make sure the mounts are level and aligned with each other.
  4. Attach the other side of the headboard mounts to the back of the headboard, using screws and a drill.
  5. Hang the headboard on the wall-mounted mounts by sliding the hooks or clasps into the slotted receptacles.

It's important to follow the instructions that come with your wall-mounted headboard and to ensure that the headboard mounts and mounting receptacles line up properly. With a little patience and attention to detail, you can enjoy the benefits of a stylish and functional headboard for your adjustable bed.

Free-Standing Headboards

Free-standing headboards, sometimes referred to as stand-alone or floor-standing headboards, offer a range of benefits, including versatility and style options. These types of headboards are particularly popular among those who own adjustable beds since they do not require attachment to the bed base or wall.

Depending on the style of the headboard you choose and whether it comes preassembled, you may need to assemble it yourself. However, once assembled, a free-standing headboard can add a touch of elegance and practicality to your bedroom décor.

Panel Headboards

A panel headboard for an adjustable bed is a type of headboard made up of panels that are attached to the bed frame. These panels can be made from a variety of materials, such as wood, metal or upholstered fabric.

Panel headboards can be a good choice for those who want a headboard that is both stylish and functional. They can be customised to match the design of your room and provide a comfortable backrest when you're sitting up in bed.

Our Versailles Adjustable Bed has optional side panels which piece together to create a stunning cushioned headboard with vertical pleating.

Tips for installing your own headboard to an Opera Adjustable Base

Generally, you can use a variety of different headboards with an adjustable base. However, it's essential you have the correct equipment and fixings to do so.

  • Ensure you have the headboard fixing brackets, making sure they are a universal fit to suit different headboard heights and sizes
  • If you are installing a wall-mounted headboard, check you have the additional parts (they usually come with the headboard itself)

Adjustable Beds and Existing Surrounds

Want to keep you current bed but turn it into an adjustable bed? Our adjustable bed base can be compatible.

Many Opera customers have installed our Motion Adjustable Base into their existing be frame, just ensure the following:

  • It must be possible to remove the wooden or metal slats from the bed frame.
  • When the slats are removed, the centre of the bed frame should be at floor level with no obstructions i.e. no under-bed drawers.
  • There must be a minimum dimension within the bed frame

Existing Bed Frame Installation

Installing our adjustable bed base into your current frame is simple.

However, it is recommended you use two people to lift the adjustable base due to its heavy weight.

How to install:

  1. Assemble the bed frame so that the outer frame is attached. Ensure that there are no slats installed.
  2. Lift the Adjustable Smart Base onto the bed frame. Installation can be made easier if the head and foot end are raised to the highest position as the base can be held by the metal platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of our most asked questions for installing a headboard with an adjustable bed.

Are all adjustable beds compatible with a headboard?

Most adjustable beds are suitable for use with a headboard. However, different headboards are more suitable to the adjustable bed frame. It’s always worth checking with your adjustable bed supplier if your headboard is suitable before installing it.

At Opera Beds, our motion adjustable bed bases are suitable to be installed with a variety of different headboards. We recommend purchasing a universal mounting kit.

Does your headboard need to be the same size as the adjustable bed?

Yes, the size of your headboard should match the size of your adjustable bed frame. If you are unsure if your headboard is compatible, get in touch with us.

What bed frame is not suitable for an adjustable base?

A bed frame with under-bed storage may not be compatible with an adjustable bed base as they do not come apart easily and would restrict the movement of the adjustable bed base.

If you require an adjustable bed with storage, our Motion Divan Adjustable Base can be customised to include up to four drawers.
