America’s Most Sleep-Deprived States Revealed

Sleep is one of the clearest measures of everyday health, but for millions of Americans, getting enough rest is far from guaranteed.

According to the CDC, 30.5% of US adults sleep fewer than 7 hours in a 24-hour period, despite recommendations that adults should get at least 7 hours of sleep per night. Meanwhile, an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans live with chronic sleep disorders, showing how widespread sleep disruption has become.

To uncover where sleep challenges are most visible across the US, Opera Beds analyzed Google search behavior for common sleep conditions and concerns across every state. We then compared this with CDC data on insufficient sleep and wider health outcomes, including diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, coronary heart disease, stroke, and depression.*

These rankings reflect search behavior rather than confirmed diagnoses. A high search rate may be influenced by awareness, media coverage, access to health information, or differences in how people describe sleep symptoms online.

1. Hawaii ranks first, with 5,180 sleep condition searches per 100,000 people

Hawaii records the highest rate of sleep condition searches in the US, with 74,220 annual searches across the terms analyzed.

When adjusted for population, this equals 5,180 searches per 100,000 people, placing Hawaii ahead of every other state.

What makes Hawaii particularly striking is that it also ranks first for self-reported insufficient sleep, with 45.9% of adults reporting fewer than seven hours of rest.

This means Hawaii appears at the top of both sides of the analysis: people are searching heavily for sleep-related conditions, and adults are also reporting the highest levels of short sleep. External research suggests stress may be one factor behind Hawaii’s sleep challenges, with a Sleep Foundation survey of Hawaii residents finding that mental health, stress and anxiety were the most commonly cited reasons for not getting enough sleep.

2. New York ranks second, with 5,122 sleep condition searches per 100,000 people

New York ranks second, recording 1,024,530 annual sleep condition searches.

This gives the state a rate of 5,122 searches per 100,000 people, only slightly behind Hawaii. However, unlike Hawaii, New York does not appear in the top 10 for self-reported insufficient sleep, showing how search behavior and reported sleep outcomes do not always tell the same story.

Part of this may be explained by how people access and use health information online. New York is a large, highly connected state, with Census data showing 94.0% of households have a computer and 89.6% have a broadband internet subscription. Nationally, Pew Research Center has also found that many Americans now use digital sources for health information, including major health websites, social media, and AI chatbots.

This means a high search rate may reflect greater online health information-seeking, awareness, or willingness to search for symptoms, rather than a higher diagnosed rate of sleep disorders. It reinforces the need to treat search data as a measure of public interest, not clinical prevalence.

3. Virginia ranks third, with 4,630 sleep condition searches per 100,000 people

When adjusted for population, this gives the state a rate of 4,630 searches per 100,000 people, placing it ahead of larger states including California, Georgia, Illinois, and Massachusetts.

Virginia also has one of the highest rates of insomnia-related searches, ranking second only to Hawaii. This suggests that sleep difficulty isn’t just appearing in Virginia’s overall search behavior; it's also being driven heavily by searches for insomnia specifically.

However, as with New York, Virginia does not appear in the top 10 states for self-reported insufficient sleep. This again shows the gap between what people search for online and public health data.

“The top three states show why search data needs context. Hawaii ranks first for both sleep-related searches and self-reported short sleep, which suggests sleep difficulties may be especially visible there across both public search behavior and health data. External research has also found that Hawaii residents commonly cite mental health, stress and anxiety, work schedules and sleep environments as reasons they do not get enough sleep, and several pressures may be overlapping.

 

“New York and Virginia are different. They rank highly for sleep-related searches, but they do not appear in the top 10 states for self-reported short sleep. That suggests these searches may reflect awareness or concern, or people looking up specific symptoms, rather than higher levels of short sleep across the population.

 

“Search data is useful because it shows where people are actively looking for help, but it should not be treated as a diagnostic measure. The most useful insight comes from comparing search behavior with public health data, rather than reading either source in isolation.”


California records the highest total number of sleep condition searches

While California ranks fifth when adjusted for population, it records the highest total number of sleep condition searches in the top 10.

The state saw 1,727,010 annual searches across the sleep condition terms analyzed, making it the largest overall search market for sleep-related conditions.

This is partly expected given California’s population size, but the scale is still notable. California records more than 700,000 more sleep condition searches than New York, despite New York ranking higher once searches are normalized per 100,000 people.

California also stands out in the condition-specific data, ranking as America’s sleep paralysis search hotspot, with 356,220 annual sleep paralysis searches and the highest rate per 100,000 people.


Hawaii and New York also take the lead in searches about sleep help

The same two states that lead for sleep condition searches also rank highest for broader sleep help searches, including terms around how to sleep better, trouble sleeping, and why people can’t sleep.

The pattern suggests that Hawaii and New York aren’t only searching heavily for named sleep conditions, but also for broader sleep support. In other words, these aren’t just searches about disorders; they’re searches from people trying to understand why they cannot sleep and what they can do about it.

California ranks fourth by rate but records the highest total number of sleep help searches, with more than half a million searches over the year.

North Dakota and Alaska also appear in the top 10 despite much smaller populations. While their total search volumes are lower, their population-adjusted rates indicate that residents are searching for sleep help at levels comparable to those in much larger states.


Insomnia is the most searched sleep condition in every US state

Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting restful sleep is the most visible sleep-related concern nationwide: insomnia ranks as the most searched sleep condition in all 50 states.

Hawaii records the highest insomnia search rate in the US, with 39,620 annual searches, equivalent to 2,765 searches per 100,000 people. Virginia ranks second by rate, with 2,062 searches per 100,000 people, followed by Colorado at 2,034.

The data also shows that insomnia is not only a high-rate issue in smaller states. Texas records the highest total number of insomnia searches among the top 10 states, with 595,410 annual searches, followed by New York at 390,030.

Different states lead for more specific concerns such as sleep paralysis, snoring, sleepwalking, or restless legs syndrome, but insomnia remains the leading named sleep condition everywhere. This suggests it is both the most widespread sleep concern in search behavior and one of the clearest national signals in the data.

“Insomnia is often used as a catch-all term for poor sleep, but it has a more specific meaning. It usually refers to repeated difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, waking too early, or having sleep that does not feel restorative, despite having the opportunity to sleep.

 

“Not every bad night is insomnia. Stress, travel, illness, pain, medication, screen use, caffeine, alcohol, or an uncomfortable sleep environment can all temporarily disrupt sleep. However, if sleep problems occur regularly, last for several weeks, or begin to affect energy, mood, concentration, safety, or daily life, it is worth speaking to a healthcare professional.

 

“It’s also important to determine the root cause of the sleep problem. Snoring, breathing pauses, restless legs, pain, anxiety, depression, or medication side effects can all affect sleep, and they may need different support from insomnia itself.  Sleep issues that stem from poor sleep hygiene should be addressed by making changes to the sleep environment or bedtime routine”


The states most associated with insomnia, snoring, sleep paralysis, and restless legs searches

Although insomnia is the leading sleep condition nationwide, the data reveals more specific search patterns when individual conditions are separated out.

California records the clearest condition-specific hotspot, ranking first for sleep paralysis searches with 356,220 annual searches and 905 searches per 100,000 people.

Other standout findings include:

  • New York leads the country for sleepwalking searches, with 152,670 searches over the year.
  • New Jersey ranks highest for restless legs syndrome searches, with 92,670 annual searches.
  • Arizona records the highest snoring search rate, at 405 searches per 100,000 people.
  • Vermont ranks first for both night terrors and parasomnia-related searches.

The findings show that while insomnia is the leading sleep condition nationwide, other sleep concerns create distinct state-level search patterns.


The US states with the highest rates of insufficient sleep

Search behavior shows where people are looking for sleep information, but CDC data provides a separate view of where adults report short sleep duration.

Hawaii ranks first, with 45.9% of adults reporting that they usually get fewer than seven hours of sleep. West Virginia follows at 42.6%, while Alabama ranks third at 41.4%.

The rest of the table shows a different pattern. While New York ranks highly for sleep searches, the states with the highest levels of short sleep are more concentrated across the South and Appalachia, including Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Florida.


The US states with the lowest rates of insufficient sleep 

At the other end of the ranking, Vermont has the lowest rate of insufficient sleep in the US, with 30.0% of adults reporting short sleep duration.

Minnesota ranks second at 30.3%, followed by Colorado at 30.6%.

Even in America’s best-rested state, three in 10 adults report sleeping fewer than seven hours, showing how widespread insufficient sleep is across the country.

The best-rested states also show why it is useful to separate search behavior from sleep outcomes. Colorado ranks among the lowest states for insufficient sleep, but it also appears in the top three for insomnia search rates. This suggests that high online interest in sleep information does not always mean a state has the highest levels of reported short sleep.


Insufficient sleep is most strongly linked with diabetes and high blood pressure rates

To understand how insufficient sleep relates to wider health outcomes, we compared each state’s CDC short sleep duration rate with CDC data for selected health conditions.

In simple terms, we looked at whether states with higher levels of insufficient sleep also tended to have higher levels of certain health conditions.

  • How this was worked out: Each state was given a short sleep rate and a health outcome rate, then those two sets of figures were compared to see how closely they moved together.

The clearest pattern was seen with diabetes and high blood pressure. States where more adults report sleeping fewer than seven hours also tend to have higher rates of diabetes and high blood pressure.

Diabetes showed the strongest link, with a correlation score of 0.63. High blood pressure followed closely at 0.60, while stroke mortality also showed a moderate positive association at 0.53.

As a rough guide, the closer a correlation score is to 1, the more strongly two measures move in the same direction. A score closer to 0 indicates little or no clear relationship.

These findings do not show that insufficient sleep causes higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, or stroke mortality. They show that, at state level, these measures tend to be higher in many of the same places.

Health outcomes are influenced by many factors, including:

  • Age
  • Income
  • Health care access
  • Diet
  • Physical activity
  • Smoking
  • Disability
  • Underlying medical conditions

This means the results should be read as correlations only, but they do highlight the wider public health importance of sleep.

Expert advice: Why better sleep support matters for people living with health conditions

For many people, poor sleep is not simply about struggling to switch off. It can be affected by pain, breathing difficulties, reduced mobility, recovery needs, and long-term health conditions.

Methodology

Opera Beds has designed and supplied home hospital beds, mattresses, and mobility-support products for over 20 years, combining clinical functionality with designs that feel at home. Our aim is to support comfort, mobility, and independence for people living with changing health and care needs.

To understand where sleep challenges are most visible across the US, we analyzed Google search behavior, CDC insufficient sleep data, and CDC health outcome data.

Sleep condition and concern search data

A fixed list of search terms was created covering common sleep conditions, symptoms, and concerns.

This included clinical terms and everyday search phrases relating to:

  • Insomnia
  • Sleep apnea
  • Snoring
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Sleep paralysis
  • Sleepwalking
  • Night terrors
  • Narcolepsy
  • Circadian rhythm disorder
  • Hypersomnia
  • Bruxism
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Sleep help and sleep improvement searches

Using Google Keyword Planner, state-level search volumes were collected for each keyword across the most recent complete 12-month period available, from July 2025 to June 2026.

Keywords were grouped into broader sleep condition or concern categories. For example, searches such as “sleep paralysis causes” and “how to stop sleep paralysis” were grouped under Sleep Paralysis. Annual search volumes were then normalized per 100,000 residents in each state.

Search data reflects online interest and help-seeking behavior. It does not show confirmed diagnoses or clinical prevalence.

Insufficient sleep data

State-level insufficient sleep data was taken from the CDC Chronic Disease Indicators.

County-level short sleep duration estimates were taken from CDC PLACES county-level data.

For both datasets, age-adjusted prevalence of short sleep duration among adults was used. This is defined as adults aged 18 and over who report fewer than 7 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period.

County figures are model-based estimates rather than direct survey results for every individual county. The data also includes county-equivalent areas, such as Louisiana parishes, Alaska boroughs and census areas, independent cities, Connecticut planning regions, and Washington, DC.

Health outcome correlations

State-level, age-adjusted CDC data was collected for selected health indicators from the CDC Chronic Disease Indicators, to explore whether states with higher levels of insufficient sleep also tend to experience worse health outcomes.

These included:

  • Obesity prevalence in adults
  • Diabetes prevalence in adults
  • High blood pressure prevalence in adults
  • Coronary heart disease mortality
  • Stroke mortality
  • Depression prevalence in adults

Correlation coefficients were calculated between state-level insufficient sleep prevalence and each selected health indicator.

A positive coefficient indicates that both measures tend to rise together, while a negative coefficient indicates that one tends to fall as the other rises.

Correlation does not prove causation. Health outcomes are influenced by many additional factors, including age, income, health care access, diet, physical activity, smoking, disability, and underlying medical conditions.
