Frequently Asked Questions About Adjustable Beds
What is the zero-gravity position?
NASA initially developed the zero-gravity position to ease the stress on astronauts' bodies as they launch into space. The position replicates weightlessness and is the body's natural position when there is no gravity. The position has many benefits for us here on earth, including improved breathing, reduced pain and swelling, better heart health, and even acid reflux prevention.
In basic terms, you achieve the position by laying flat on your back and raising both your head and feet slightly above your heart and stomach. Luckily, with an Opera® bed, achieving zero-gravity is effortless with a pre-programmed zero-gravity position on every remote. Find out how zero gravity can help your sleep.
Can I use any mattress on an adjustable bed?
Standard sprung mattresses are not compatible with an electric bed base; however, some foam models are. Contact the manufacturer or supplier to find out whether your foam mattress can be used with an adjustable bed.
At Opera Beds, we design all our mattresses for use on adjustable and moving bed bases, utilising specially made hinge points and filling materials to ensure maximum flexibility and support.

Can I buy a split adjustable bed for two people?
Of course! If you're sharing with a partner, you can buy a dual, split or twin adjustable bed that provides the ultimate comfort for both of you.
If you buy a king size or a super king size adjustable bed, it’ll have a dual adjustable base. This means each side has its own control and mattress adjustment options, so there’s no need to fight over the remote.
If you don’t require a split bed, a double adjustable bed offers a comfortable shared sleeping space with all the same adjustability features.
Are adjustable beds difficult to setup?
If you've put furniture together before, you should be able to set up your adjustable bed with ease. In fact, all of our beds are designed for straightforward self-assembly so you can experience comfort as soon as possible.
All of our adjustable beds are designed to be easy to assemble, so if you’ve put together furniture before, you shouldn’t have to worry about setting your new bed up.
If you’d prefer an expert to take a look, we offer a professional installation service to give you complete peace of mind.

Are electric beds noisy?
A quality adjustable electric bed should never be noisy. Your bed shouldn't disturb your rest and relaxation, and that's why the motors in Opera adjustable beds are super quiet.
Can I get VAT relief on my bed?
If you are buying an electric bed for personal use or a family member/loved one, VAT relief can be applied if you or they are registered disabled or have a recognised long-term medical condition.
VAT relief also applies to related products and services such as pressure care mattresses, bedding, and delivery.
Find more information on VAT relief on the gov.uk website.
What is an adjustable bed?
An adjustable bed is an electronic bed frame that can be moved to ensure proper support in a range of sleeping positions.
The beds are electrically adjusted and are typically controlled by a remote that lets you raise or lower different sections of the bed, elevating your back and legs.
Adjustable beds are especially useful if you suffer from joint pain, back problems, poor circulation, acid reflux, and more.
What are the benefits of an adjustable bed?
Sleeping on an adjustable bed frame can improve your sleep quality by offering proper support and comfort in various positions. Electric adjustable beds are specially designed to promote blood flow and reduce pain. The benefits of sleeping on these beds include:
1. Improved sleep quality:
With an adjustable bed, you can find a comfortable sleeping position that helps you fall asleep quickly without tossing and turning.
2. Enhanced circulation
By elevating your legs, you can improve blood flow and reduce swelling. This is particularly important if you have varicose veins or you’re recovering from surgery and other injuries.
3. Reduced back and joint pain
Adjustable electric beds promote natural spinal alignment by elevating the head and feet, lowering the pressure on your joints.
4. ‘Zero gravity’ position
All Opera Beds come with a zero gravity programme, which reduces the pressure on your spine, lower back, and legs, providing relief for chronic pain. Read more in our guide to zero-gravity sleeping or shop our zero-gravity beds.
5. Relief from acid reflux and heartburn
Sleeping with your head elevated can prevent stomach acid from moving up your throat, mitigating the risk of acid reflux and heartburn, which can keep you up at night.
6. Reduced chance of snoring
Another benefit of sleeping with your head elevated is that it can reduce snoring and sleep apnoea by opening up your airways. Helping both you and your partner get a good night’s rest.
Adjustable beds Plus Base features explained
If you upgrade your adjustable bed to a Plus Base, you’ll get all of the benefits listed above, as well as the following handy features:
Auto Regression
The Auto-regression feature uses glide-back technology. When raised, the bed backrest travels back, alleviating stomach compression and giving you extra room in bed.
Massage Function
To help you relax before you sleep and relieve tension around the body, Plus Bases feature a massage function that you can program to your preferences, changing the intensity and duration of pulses. Shop our adjustable beds with massage systems.
Lumbar Adjustment
Additional adjustable lumbar support is a key feature of Plus Bases, designed to alleviate pressure on the spine, pelvis, and hips.
Neck Pillow Tilt
Plus Base adjustable beds have an extra motor, specifically for the neck, this increases pillow tilt and benefits users who sleep in a fully upright position.
Underbed Light
To help you navigate through your bedroom in the dark, a soft, warm light is fitted underneath the bed. This can be controlled via the remote and reduces the risk of falling and toe stubbing.
USB Charging Port
Each side of the Plus Base bed has USB-A and USB-C charging ports, which are convenient for charging mobile phones and tablets.
More Common Questions
Are adjustable beds too big for a small bedroom?
Opera’s adjustable beds, in the single 3ft size, are made the same width as a standard single bed but are a little longer. So, if you are thinking of purchasing for a smaller room, the only size consideration you really need to think about is allowing for a little extra length of around 10-12cm. Although furniture and walk-around room should be taken into consideration for your comfort.
Do I need to buy special sheets for an adjustable bed?
Yes, it’s like you’ll need different sheets to cover your adjustable mattress and electronic bed frame.
The bed's movement can cause the sheets to move around, and if they’re not suitable for the adjustable bed, they may pop off the mattress or bunch up in the middle.
To help you avoid waking up on the mattress, our Jersey Cotton Fitted Stretch Sheet is made with high levels of elasticity, ensuring it’s suitable for you and your adjustable bed.
