Frequently Asked Questions About Adjustable Beds
What is the zero-gravity position?
NASA initially developed the zero-gravity position to ease the stress on astronauts' bodies as they launch into space. The position replicates weightlessness and is the body's natural position when there is no gravity. The position has many benefits for us here on earth, including improved breathing, reduced pain and swelling, better heart health, and even acid reflux prevention.
In basic terms, you achieve the position by laying flat on your back and raising both your head and feet slightly above your heart and stomach. Luckily, with an Opera® bed, achieving zero-gravity is effortless with a pre-programmed zero-gravity position on every remote. Find out how zero gravity can help your sleep.
Can I use any mattress on an adjustable bed?
Standard mattresses are not designed for use on an electric bed base. If you want to use your existing mattress then it all depends on the type of mattress you own. Standard sprung mattresses are not compatible but some foam models are, it's best to check with your mattress supplier.
All Opera mattresses are designed for use on adjustable and moving bed bases with specially designed hinge points and filling materials for maximum flexibility and support.
Can I buy a split adjustable bed for two people?
Of course! If you're sharing with a partner, you can buy a dual/split/twin bed that provides the ultimate comfort for both of you.
Opera beds in a king and super king size have a dual adjustable base. Each person has their own handheld control and mattress adjustment options - no need to fight over the remote!
Are adjustable beds difficult to setup?
If you've put together furniture before, you should be able to set up your adjustable bed with ease. In fact, all of our beds are designed for straightforward self-assembly so you experience comfort as soon as possible.
Don't fancy assembling the bed, or need some assistance? We offer a professional installation service to give you peace of mind.
Are electric beds noisy?
A quality adjustable electric bed should never be noisy. Your bed shouldn't disturb your rest and relaxation, and that's why the motors in Opera adjustable beds are super quiet.
Can I get VAT relief on my bed?
If you are buying an electric bed for personal use or a family member/loved one, VAT relief can be applied if you/they are registered disabled or have a recognised long-term medical condition. VAT relief also applies to related products and services such as mattresses, bedding, and your delivery.
For more information on VAT relief, view the gov.uk website.
What is an electric adjustable bed?
An electric adjustable bed is a bed that has an adjustable back and leg rest. These beds have orthopaedic benefits, allowing you to elevate your back and legs to create additional support, as well as adding extra comfort.
Unlike a standard bed, adjustable beds make it easier to find a comfortable sleeping position. An electric adjustable bed will also provide improved postural support, allowing you to find an ideal sleeping position.
Some of the adjustable options you can use to customise your bed include:
- The size of the bed
- The style of bed you prefer
- Your headboard type
- The material used in your bed
- The type of mattress you want to use
Our electric bed frames come with an easy to use handset, although a full set of instructions will be provided when you make a purchase. At the touch of a button, an adjustable bed allows you to conveniently change your bed position to provide postural support and the ultimate in comfort.
Opera electric adjustable beds can be tailored to suit your needs, as they allow you to find a comfortable position for sleeping at night.
Our spines have a natural 'S' shape which conventional beds don't conform to, which sometimes leads to back pain. Using your remote control, you can make your bed align perfectly with the curvature of your spine.
Opera adjustable beds are different to most other electric beds on the market, as they host an array of advanced smart technology, as standard Opera Adjustable Beds include standard head and leg adjustment, Zero-Gravity Mode, Anti-Snore and Memory Programming. If you upgrade to the Plus base you get an additional:
- Neck pillow tilt
- Lumbar adjustment
- USB charging port
- Massage therapy
- An under-bed lighting feature
- Auto-regression technology
Plus upgrade features explained:
Auto Regression
The Auto-regression feature uses glide-back technology. The bed back-rest travels back when raised to alleviate stomach compression and give extra room in the bed.
Massage Function
Using the massage function is a great way to relax in your new bed. It can be programmed to your preferred pulse, intensity and duration, helping relieve tension around the body.
Lumbar Adjustment
Lumbar adjustment is an extra adjustment that raises from the back-rest to alleviate pressure on the spine, pelvis and hips.
Neck Pillow Tilt
An additional pillow tilt with the Plus upgrade means you get an additional motor for the neck section for extra adjustment and a fully upright position.
Underbed Light
The underbed light is a soft, warm light that can be turned on and off via the wireless control. Perfect for navigating through your bedroom in the dark.
USB Charging Port
The Plus base upgrade also includes a USB-A and USB-C charging ports at each side of the bed. Perfect for mobile phones and tablets.

How do adjustable beds work?
Each bed comes with a straightforward electric handset that allows you to change the orientation of each section of the bed to find a comfortable sleeping position.
You can change this yourself, or use a selection of pre-programmed positions that have been specially created for ease of use. One example of this is our anti-snore position, which gently elevates your head to open your airways.
The process of using our electric beds is effortless, as the handsets are designed for ease of use. They also have a light feature and all the buttons are backlit, enabling use in the dark.
We have a range of sizes available to suit every need. If you share your bed with a partner or spouse, you can even buy a split double/twin bed. This gives both people the option to choose their own sleeping positions, as each side of the bed is independent of the other.
A particular favourite is Our Opera® Motion Adjustable Bed. This bed can be purchased in a variety of sizes which includes our dual sizes two sizes: either as a king dual bed (150cm/5ft) or as a super king dual bed (180cm/6ft).
Adjustable Beds for the Elderly
For many elderly people, staying mobile and active is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your health and keep you feeling well. Additional mobility supports, such as adjustable beds, riser recliner chairs, and even tools like shower chairs, railings, and walking frames are all great ways to keep you moving and ensure that you’re able to stay active as safely as possible.
Adjustable beds have a huge range of health benefits for elderly people. As we get older, muscles and joints can stiffen and weaken, reducing mobility in lots of different ways. Conditions like arthritis and oedema are also more common as we age.
Adjustable beds can help by:
- Reducing back pain and joint pain
- Making it easier to get out of bed
- Improving health by keeping you mobile
- Improving circulation
- Reducing pain caused by arthritis
- Reducing swelling in the extremities and preventing conditions like varicose veins
Adjustable beds for seniors can be a brilliant tool to help maintain independence and keep you mobile and safe in your own home. They can also be used to alleviate the discomfort associated with a range of conditions, giving you more than just a good night’s sleep!

What are the benefits of using an Opera® adjustable bed?
Electric adjustable beds have a vast array of features that can enhance comfort and give you a better night's sleep.
An electric adjustable bed is now a necessity for many people - particularly if you’re struggling to sleep at night. Some of our beds also come in double sizes, which means you don't have to sleep in a separate bed from your spouse or partner, giving you an extra bit of comfort when sleeping.
All our dual adjustable beds come with two hand controls, allowing each side of the bed to be adjusted individually.
A full range of health benefits
One of the main reasons that people buy adjustable beds is due to the positive effects they can have on your health. An electric adjustable bed can increase your overall well-being, as well as better quality of sleep.
One of the main features included within our adjustable beds is the zero-gravity position.
The zero-gravity position was first invented by the American Space Organisation NASA. It was designed to ease stress on the bodies of astronauts in space, replicating weightlessness. However, it can also have a positive impact on your sleep health on Earth.
Zero gravity is a safe sleeping position and is associated with improved comfort and sleep quality. The zero-gravity position helps to:
- Reduce pain and swelling
- Increase heart health
- Improve your breathing
- Prevent acid reflux from forming
Available as a pre-programmed position on your handset remote, the option of zero gravity is made easy with our adjustable beds.
Some of the other medical benefits that our electric beds have include:
- A decrease in musculoskeletal pain, as well as other orthopaedic benefits
- Increased blood flow to the heart and body
- Diminished sleep apnoea and snoring
- Improved breathing and oxygen circulation, as well as an alleviation of asthma symptoms
- Reduced insomnia
- Decreased back and neck pain
- Reduced leg swelling, oedema and varicose veins
- Improved digestion
- Less pressure on the back, reducing the risk of pressure sores and ulcers
- Relief from arthritis (in some cases, an adjustable bed can actually prevent you from getting this disease)
- Reduced heartburn and acid reflux issues
At Opera, we also have a massive range of mattresses and other accessories that can help you with your health.
As you can see, using one of our electric adjustable beds can have a positive effect on your health - particularly as you get older.
If you're worried about pressure sores or pressure on your back causing pain, our collection of pressure care mattresses could be the perfect solution when combined with one of our beds.
Added comfort and support
Our electric beds are perfectly designed to help you with your everyday aches and pains, as our exclusive sleep technology will ensure you get a decent night's sleep - which can be difficult when you have a disability or an illness that causes pain when sleeping.
If you suffer from insomnia or find it hard to drift off at night, using an adjustable bed will allow you to change your sleeping arrangements to suit your needs.
By raising the backrest, there is no need to rearrange your pillows or use someone else to help you get comfortable in bed. Our electric adjustable beds also give added support over a conventional bed/mattress, making sleeping much easier.
Improved quality of sleep
One of the main advantages of using an adjustable bed is that it will improve your overall quality of sleep, making you feel a lot more rested than sleeping on a standard bed. If you're uncomfortable in bed, you're likely to change positions a lot, which may lead to you waking up more often.
With our electric adjustable beds, you're sure to have a better night's sleep, as you can use the electric handset to create a comfortable position that suits your needs. On average, you should change your mattress every six to eight years, and studies have shown that getting a new bed and mattress can improve your quality of sleep in general. Sleeping with your legs elevated has many health benefits, such as improving circulation and relieving back pain.
You're sure to wake up feeling refreshed every time you go to sleep, ready for the day ahead!

More Common Questions
Are adjustable beds too big for a small bedroom?
Opera’s adjustable beds, in the single 3ft size, are made the same width as a standard single bed but are a little longer. So, if you are thinking of purchasing for a smaller room, the only size consideration you really need to think about is allowing for a little extra length of around 10-12cm. Although furniture and walk-around room should be taken into consideration for your comfort.
Do I need to buy special sheets for an adjustable bed?
Most standard flat or fitted sheets work acceptably with electric and orthopaedic beds. For a perfect fit, we recommend Opera® Jersey Stretch Sheets which are made specifcally for our beds and stretch/conform to the profiling mattress.
Most adjustable beds are 200cm/6ft6 long, so you will need long single sheets compared to a standard UK single, which is 190cm/6ft3.
