What is a profiling bed?
Profiling care beds are used in care homes and private homes to help elderly and disabled users with mobility and support, whilst also assisting carers with nursing. Electric profiling beds get their name from their profiling mattress platform, which allows users to raise the backrest to sit up in bed and raise the footrest and knee-break to elevate their legs.
Profiling beds are also height adjustable which allows the whole bed to raise and lower, and some models have a lilting function called Trendelenburg. All functions are operated electrically through a wired handset which can be clipped onto the side of the bed. It should be noted here that the Trendelenburg feature should only be used under care supervision or by a healthcare professional.
Beds may also be chosen with side rails at either side of the mattress platform which can be raised and lowered to help prevent falls from the bed. We also have a range of separate bed rails for purchase in our accessories section.
Frequently Asked Questions About Profiling Care Beds
What is the difference between a low bed and a floor bed?
Both bed types are designed to minimise the risk of injury from bed falls and they also have additional benefits such as easing swinging legs onto the bed and providing a feeling of safety and security for the user. A low profiling bed lowers closer to the ground than a standard nursing bed, usually around 20-25cm from floor to bed base in the lowest position. A profiling floor bed goes even lower and rests almost on the floor at 10-12cm in its lowest floor position to provide an ultra-safe sleeping position.
What size is a profiling bed?
Our profiling beds come in different sizes ranging from a standard 3ft single, 3ft 6 wide single, 4ft small double and 6ft. Our 6ft size is our dual beds which have two individual mattress platfroms, perfect for two people.
Can I use my own mattress with a profiling bed?
Most regular mattresses will not work on a profiling bed because they do not contour to the different positions of the bed. Some foam mattresses are compatible, but you should check with your mattress supplier before attempting to use on a profiling bed.
All Opera mattresses are specifically designed for use with our profiling beds. You can view the range below:

How quickly can I get a profiling bed?
Most of our profiling beds are available from stock and you can choose either next day courier delivery (requires you to assemble the bed) or our 2-man home installation service which is 4-7 working days. Urgent and same day deliveries are also available on request.
How high are profiling beds?
This depends on the type of profiling bed you require, all our hospital beds can be lowered and raised. The most common height range is the standard height, in its lowest position the bed is a similar height to a normal divan bed which is around 35-45cm from the floor to the mattress platform base. When its fully raised the bed reaches nursing height of around 70-80cm. Nursing height is the equivalent of a carer’s waist level.
We also have hospital beds within our range that can be lowered much closer to the floor than a standard height bed. In their lowest position this is typically around 20-25cm from the floor to the top of the mattress platform. The low height range gives safety to users at risk of falling out of bed, particularly users who suffer with dementia they are less likely to be injured from a bed fall at this height.
We also have profiling beds such as the Solo Collection with an All-in-one height range. This is where the bed can be lowered to the height of a low bed (15-25cm) and raised to full nursing height of around 70-80cm.
Do you offer VAT relief?
Yes, you do not have to pay VAT providing you have a recognised long-term medical condition (e.g. arthritis, diabetes etc) and you are purchasing for personal use or on behalf of a family member or person in your care. You can pay without VAT by filling out a simple declaration form when you go to checkout online or if you order over the phone you will pay without VAT and a form will be emailed to you to complete your purchase.
If you have any questions on VAT or eligibility, you can view more information and government guidance here or call us on 0333 222 8584.
The different types of profiling beds

If you need a little more advice about which bed is best for you, contact our expert team today.
Standard height
Standard height profiling beds are the most common type of profiling bed. In their lowest position, they are around 40cm from the floor which is a similar height to a normal divan bed. When raised to their highest position they are around 80 cm from the floor, the height of a carer’s waist level to facilitate nursing for the user on the bed. Our Classic profiling bed features a standard height range.
Low height
Low height profiling beds can be lowered much closer to the floor, around 20cm away. This creates a safe sleeping height when side rails are not suitable for users and also offers more flexibility when getting in and out of the bed. However, low profiling beds can only be raised to around 60cm high meaning a carer would have to bend over the bed to nurse the patient.
A popular example of a low height bed is our Opera Classic Low Profiling Bed. Our Opera Solo Profiling Bed has an ultra-low floor height, which is good for vulnerable users, also providing added safety without the risk of bed falls.
All-in-one height
All-in-one-height profiling beds are low and standard height beds combined into one bed, hence the name. They have an extensive height range of around 20 cm – 80 cm which mean users get the benefits of a low sleeping/access height as well as a high nursing height. We have a wide range of all-in-one height profiling beds available - why not check out our Opera Signature Profiling Beds?
Wide profiling beds
Wide profiling beds are typically around 4ft wide and are ideal for users who require additional room when in bed. A 4ft wide bed is classed as an extra wide single bed or small double bed. Our Opera Signature Bariatric Profiling Bed is perfect for those needing a wider fit.
We also have profiling beds available in a wide single fit, which are slightly bigger than the traditional 3ft single size (3ft 6). Our dual profiling beds can also accommodate two people, so you can continue to share a bed with your partner or spouse if care circumstances change.

Of course, one of the main reasons that people choose to buy profiling beds is due to the health benefits they can add to your life. These fantastic pieces of furniture can help ease pain and improve care for a variety of different conditions, useful for people suffering from a huge range of illnesses.
When buying a new hospital profiling bed, it's important to make sure that the bed you choose is right for your needs. If you find that you’re not quite sure what’s right for you, give us a call and we’ll be happy to help!
Some of the ailments our profiling beds can help with include:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Motor Neurone Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Insomnia
- Conditions that cause breathing difficulties
- Recovery following a stroke
- Parkinson's & Alzheimer’s Disease
- Skin conditions (and subsequent infections)
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
Some beds are designed to help with slightly different conditions, so it's a good idea to do some research first before making a decision on which item to buy. For example, our Opera Signature Bariatric Profiling Beds are perfect for those with bariatric conditions or who need additional bed space.
Profiling beds have extra safety features built into them that conventional beds don't have, making them the best choice for a selection of different needs. We also sell a range of different care bed accessories that can be added to your bed set-up if you wish, useful for enhancing the overall user comfort and safety.
Adjustable Settings
One key benefit of a profiling bed is the profiling mattress platform. This allows you to change the position of the bed to maximise your comfort, featuring a range of height and position combinations.
This is true of both manual conventional profiling beds and their electric variations, so no matter which type you go for, you're sure to feel at home. With a manual bed, a foot pump is usually required to adjust the structure, whereas electric beds are controlled via the use of a handset.
Adjusting your bed regularly can also help with circulation and respiratory issues, adding another health benefit.
Our Opera Solo Profiling Bed is one example of these fantastic adjustable height beds. It lowers down to 11cm, reducing the need for side rails and making it perfect for dementia users. This bed can also be raised up to 73.5cm to allow for nursing care and unrestricted hoist access.
Increased Autonomy and Accessibility
One of the key advantages of using our profiling beds is that they are much more accessible than standard beds, particularly if the user has a health condition. These convenient designs make getting in and out of bed a lot easier and improve your quality of life.
By investing in one of our hospital profiling beds, you can retain your independence and confidence, giving you or your loved ones more peace of mind along the way.
There are beds available for every need, allowing you to get the care you need in the comfort of your home. Our Opera Signature Profiling Bed range features a choice of three width and an all-in-one height, making it perfectly suited for any kind of nursing care.
